The Problem with Traditional Clocks
Most sports board games measure time using strict rounds or automated timers. This often feels disconnected from the real intensity and flow of a match. We wanted a pacing system where time reflects actual on-field actions rather than arbitrary time limits.
The Central Time Pool
Instead of a standard game clock, matches are governed by a Central Pool of 20 Event Tokens. Time only decreases when critical match events occur, while routine passes and simple possession changes consume zero time tokens. Specifically, a goal removes 3 tokens, fouls and penalties remove 2, and minor interruptions like saves, corners, goal-kicks, and offsides cost 1 token each.
Organic Match Pacing
The game does not end abruptly on a fixed turn; instead, it concludes naturally when the token pool is completely exhausted. Once the final token is spent, the active attacker finishes their current play, the former defender gets one final counter-attack, and the match ends. This creates a realistic sense of urgency as the clock winds down.
Playtesting Insights
During playtesting, we initially worried players might exploit the system by stalling with endless safe passes. However, the “Pass Freeze” rule naturally discourages this behavior by temporarily locking the players involved in a pass. Meanwhile, frequent saves and defensive stops steadily grind down the time pool, perfectly capturing the tense atmosphere of a tight derby.
