The Monolith Trap
In most grid-based miniature games, players tend to cluster all their tokens in a central bottleneck, creating static “piles of plastic.” This completely ruins the feel of actual football, where proper pitch coverage, width, and spatial distribution are everything.
The Introduction of Cap 4
To prevent this spatial collapse, we introduced the “Golden Rule of Capacity,” universally known as Cap 4. Under this rule, any single zone on the pitch can host a strict maximum of 4 players combined, regardless of team affiliation. The virtual goalkeeper is the sole exception, remaining permanently anchored to the goal zone.
Adjustments for Set Pieces
During full resets and set pieces like corner kicks, the rule adapts to prevent initial gridlock. During full rearrangement, each player may place only 1 player per zone (Cap 1). The sole exception is the defensive wall during a free kick, where the defending team is permitted to place up to 3 defenders in the exact same zone.
Playtesting Insights
During playtesting, Cap 4 completely transformed player strategy. Defenses quickly learned to proactively plug the central axis to deny high-bonus scoring zones. This forced attackers to organically shift their build-up play to the flanks, utilizing width and half-spaces to break down the defensive block.
