Designer Diary #1: The Vision & The Geometry of the Pitch

1 min read

Most sports board games suffer from a fundamental design flaw. They either rely heavily on physical dexterity or leave the outcome to the absolute luck of the dice. Our goal was to build an experience for players seeking the strategic depth of a wargame or an area-control title. We stripped away blind luck, placing absolute emphasis on tactical positioning.

To achieve this vision, we converted the pitch into a strict geometric grid of zones. The game functions as an exercise in action economy and spatial control. Each player acts as a strategist, maneuvering 10 active units across the board. Thus, the focus shifts from simply chasing the ball to creating local overloads in order to break down the opponent’s defense.

Dice still determine the final outcome of duels, preserving the element of unpredictability. The key difference, however, is that smart player positioning is what “bends” the statistical probabilities in your favor. Instead of hoping for a lucky roll, you structure your team to secure a mathematical advantage. This approach completely reshapes player mindset during a match.

During playtesting, we observed a striking behavioral shift. Initially, players attempted direct shots while completely ignoring defensive blocks. They quickly realized this approach led to immediate turnovers. The grid forced them to think collectively, exploit the flanks, and build up their attacks methodically.

Next time: How we prevented chaos and static piles of miniatures inside the zones. A closer look at the “Golden Rule” of the game (Cap 4) and how it realistically simulates space denial.
